The single vineyard ‘Pioneer Block’ wines of Saint Clair require separate handling, the winery using 250 small tanks to manage this. The amount of detail for winemakers Matt Thomson and Hamish Clark and their team is considerable, but the result is a fascinating range of wines that express their origin and site. In essence Saint Clair is bottling ‘terroir’ for keen wine enthusiasts to ponder and enjoy. The quality per se of the ‘Pioneer Block’ wines has been extremely high as well, reflecting the identification of superior as well as individual vineyards by Saint Clair’s owner Neal Ibbotson.

Matt Thomson and Hamish Clark

Colour:

Pale straw with green hues.

Aroma:

A lifted nose showing fruit punch aromas, fresh green tomato leaf, blackcurrant, grapefruit and melon, with refreshing underlying mineral notes.

Palate:

Fresh herbaceous style that shows classic Marlborough varietal character and zest. Flavours of blackcurrant, grapefruit and melon are carried through with a lively sparkle.

Ageing potential:

Perfect for drinking immediately or over the next three years.

Winemaking:

Selected especially for a sparkling wine style, the fruit for this wine was sourced from several vineyards including the Lower Wairau and Brancott Valley. This wine is carefully balanced to provide a refreshing and persistent off dry finish enlivened by bubbles.
