So far, the 2011s show plenty of promise and some pretty terrific wines and values. At the top of the list, not surprisingly, is Saint Clair. Saint Clair winemaker Matt Thomson is passionate about Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, and he's exploring the region in depth with the Pioneer Block series, which focuses on select parcels and vineyard sites. I like those wines very much but the reserve bottling is truly the standout - aromatic and elegant, and wonderfully delicious.

Chardonnay

Saint Clair make Chardonnay in a number of different styles.

The Saint Clair Omaka Reserve, which is a full bodied style and not for the faint hearted!

The Saint Clair Pioneer Block Chardonnay’s explore the use of French and American oak. The wines reflect both the terroir and the individual nature of the winemaking.

The Premium Range Chardonnay has light oak treatment to add complexity to the dominant fruit flavours.

The Unoaked Marlborough Chardonnay has secondary malo-lactic fermentation that provides added complexity to produce a wine enjoyed by people preferring a lighter style of Chardonnay.

Saint Clair Vicar’s Choice Chardonnay is medium bodied with bright flavours of stone fruit and youthful and creamy acidity.
