So far, the 2011s show plenty of promise and some pretty terrific wines and values. At the top of the list, not surprisingly, is Saint Clair. Saint Clair winemaker Matt Thomson is passionate about Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, and he's exploring the region in depth with the Pioneer Block series, which focuses on select parcels and vineyard sites. I like those wines very much but the reserve bottling is truly the standout - aromatic and elegant, and wonderfully delicious.
Saint Clair 2008 Vintage
This light-bodied, elegant wine shows refreshing citrus, honey and lime flavours with a round, smooth finish.
Aroma:Bright citrus aromas of sweet lime and a touch of mandarin leap from the glass with subtle hints of fresh spring flowers.
Palate:This light-bodied, easy drinking wine shows distinct Riesling characters of ripe limes and grapefruit on the palate. The wine has a distinct mineral note and good fruit weight which follows through with well-balanced acidity and a round, smooth, pleasing finish.
Ageing potential:Perfect for drinking immediately, this Riesling will continue to reward for the next two to three years.
Alcohol: 12.5%, Titratable Acidity: 7.8g/litre, Residual Sugar: 8.2g/litre, pH: 3.11.
Food match:Enjoy on its own or match with fresh
seafood, roast pork with apple sauce,
or lightly spiced Thai curries.
