2012 VINTAGE

Pioneer Block 5 Bull Block Grüner Veltliner 2012

Named Bull Block after the stud Jersey bulls who previously grazed on a paddock on this site.

Region:

Omaka Valley

Terroir:

Soils: Free-draining, mix of stones and lighter soils over clay.

Topography: Flat

Climate: Typical southern valley climate of very warm days followed by cool nights.

Regional Characteristics & contribution to Uniqueness of Flavours:

Grapes are sourced from a relatively warm vineyard site with early budburst which allows for a long ripening period into late autumn. Hang time increases the intensity and ripeness of the Grüner Veltliner characters. The clay rich, vigourmoderating soils assist in balancing the crop load of this high bunch weight variety.

Viticulture:

Careful crop manipulation to ensure vine balance is essential for this highly prolific and large bunch producing variety.

Winemaking:

2012 is the second crop from this vineyard. The grapes were handpicked and whole bunch pressed. A press cut was made early to ensure full complement of flavour and minimise skin contact. The free run juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures with selected yeasts to retain freshness and varietal characters. Pressing components were fermented in old oak and retained on lees post ferment to add complexity and roundness to the palate. Free run and pressing components were blended post ferment, carefully finished and prepared for bottle.

Colour:

Pale gold

Aroma:

Delicate aromas of peach nectar and citrus flower with subtle underlying notes of white pepper.

Palate:

Textural and mouth filling with flavours of peach nectar and orange blossom. The finish is long and lingering with a light pepper pinch.

Cellaring:

Drinking beautifully now, the structure and viscosity will continue to develop in bottle. Drink up to four years from the date of vintage.

Analysis:

Alcohol: 13% v/v, Titratable Acidity: 6.5g/litre, Residual Sugar: 3.5g/litre, pH: 3.21.

Food Match:

Known as being a great food wine that can pair with almost anything from fish dishes to Cape Malay curries. Grüner Veltliner will also pair especially well with a wide range of cheese.
