Pioneer Block 15 Strip Block Pinot Noir 2009

WINEMAKER: Matt Thomson


The Strip Block is named after a unique, narrow strip of aged, devigorating soils at the base of the southern foothills of the lower Waihopai Valley.


Lower Waihopai Valley, directly west of Blenheim.


Soils: Clay based.

Topography: Even, flat site.

Climate: Warm day temperatures with cool nights.

Vine Age: 6 years old.

Regional Characteristics & contribution to Uniqueness of Flavours:

The clay based soils provide a vigour-moderating environment conductive to growing top quality Pinot Noir.


Sourced from a single vineyard by the mouth of the Waihopai Valley. Dijon clones 667 and 777.


The fruit was harvested when it had reached full physiological ripeness and maximum flavour maturity. At the winery the fruit was held cold for four days prior to ferment to help extract maximum flavour and to enhance colour stability. Selected yeasts were used to carry out the primary alcoholic fermentation during which the fermenting must was hand plunged up to six times daily. At dryness each batch was pressed to tank and then racked off gross lees to stainless steel tanks. The wine was then dropped into a mixture of 19 per cent new French oak for ten months where it underwent malolactic fermentation. It was then blended and carefully prepared for bottling.


Bright ruby.


Lifted aromas of ripe raspberry and red cherries with lifted violet notes and toasty oak.


This elegant Pinot Noir has excellent structure and a refined palate. Flavours of ripe red berries dominate the palate with well balanced acidity and powdery tannins. The wine has good length with subtle vanilla and well seasoned oak on the finish.


Perfect for drinking immediately this wine will continue to develop for the next 3 to 5 years from vintage date.


Alcohol: 13.5% v/v, Titratable Acidity: 6.3g/litre, pH: pH 3.47.

Food Match:

Best matched with game or lamb dishes, served with mushrooms or rich savoury sauces.
