Pioneer Block 11 Cell Block Chardonnay 2007

WINEMAKER: Matt Thomson

BLOCK: 11

This vineyard is located in the lower Wairau Valley and bounds the Opawa River. Owned by Colin MacKay, formerly a senior detective in the New Zealand Police, this wine is aptly named, Cell Block.

Region:

Lower Wairau Valley

Terroir:

Soils: Even, fertile, deep free-draining silt loams on sands.

Topography: Flat, even land

Climate: Slightly cooler than further up the Wairau Valley with a long, slow ripening period.

Regional Characteristics & contribution to Uniqueness of Flavours:

This is a slightly cooler area, which contributes to this wines elegance. The soil from the Lower Wairau Valley has many available minerals reflected in the ‘salty’ character of this wine.

Viticulture:

This fruit is sourced from two adjoining blocks from within the Lower Wairau area. The grapes are a blend of 75 per cent Mendoza, and 25 per cent Clone 15. The fruit was carefully monitored during ripening and machine harvested in two batches at their respective maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness.

Colour:

Pale gold

Aroma:

Lifted aromas of tropical fruits and melon, supported by an underlying minerality

Palate:

A full-bodied palate with mineral characters, toasty vanillin oak, firm acidity and finishes with great intensity.

Cellaring:

Drink now or enjoy for up to five years from vintage date.

Analysis:

Alcohol: 14% v/v, Titratable Acidity: 5.9g/litre, pH: 3.55.

Food Match:

This delicious Pioneer Block Chardonnay makes an ideal match with seared scallops and avocado salad.
