2006 VINTAGE

Pioneer Block 1 Foundation Sauvignon Blanc 2006

A rich and full sauvignon blanc with powerful passion fruit and black currant with underlying mineral notes.

Region:

Previously part of Wairau Flood Plain (which built up the deep free-draining soils). This is the vineyard where Saint Clair discovered the fruit to make the now world famous Wairau Reserve.

Terroir:

Soils: Deep fertile, free-draining soils.

Topography: Flat.

Climate: Slightly cooler than most of the Marlborough Valley with a slower longer ripening period.

Vine Age: Older vines – 10 years.

Regional Characteristics & contribution to Uniqueness of Flavours:

The free-draining alluvial soils of this vineyard have been built up over time by flooding. These fertile soils produce the intensity of flavour in the wine. (Note the vineyard is now protected by a stopbank). The unique flavours are the combination of powerful passion fruit and honeysuckle.

Viticulture:

The grapes for this Pioneer Block were sourced from a single vineyard on the fertile, free draining soils of Marlborough's Lower Wairau area. The fruit was carefully monitored during ripening and harvested in the cool of the evening at maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness.

Winemaking:

The fruit was pressed off as quickly as possible to minimise skin contact and juice deterioration. After settling the juice was fermented using selected yeast in 100% stainless steel at cool temperatures to retain fruit flavour and freshness. This batch was selected as a Pioneer Block due to its unique flavour, intensity of flavour and complexity. After fermentation the wine was carefully prepared for bottling.

Aroma:

Powerful and intense aromas of black currant, passion fruit and gooseberry, with subtle undertones of honeysuckle.

Palate:

Rich and full, this Sauvignon Blanc has powerful passion fruit and black currant with an underlying mineral note. The intensely concentrated palate is full and nicely balanced with a long lingering finish.

Cellaring:

This wine is drinking beautifully now, and would be best enjoyed over the next one to two years.

Analysis:

Alcohol: 13% v/v, Titratable Acidity: 7.5g/litre, Residual Sugar: 4.4g/litre, pH: 3.43.

Food Match:

This wine is an ideal accompaniment to fresh Marlborough salmon or scallops and summer salads.
