If I had to pick one leader over the past five years it would be Saint Clair. This winery has made making classically fruity Sauvignon Blanc into an art form.

Clair Family Estate now sits alongside Villa Maria as one of New Zealand’s most awarded wineries. And it’s nice to know it’s still New Zealand family-owned.

Both the Vicars Choice and the regular Marlborough bottling’s of Sauvignon Blanc rated outstanding. Of equal interest are the single vineyard Pioneer Block wines [2007 vintage]

Saint Clair now makes the country’s and perhaps the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc. Saint Clair has won more top awards for Sauvignon Blanc in recent years than any of the three or four hundred other local producers. Although Sauvignon Blanc is clearly Saint Clair’s signature wine it has also earned trophies for Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Riesling over the same period.’

Winery of the Year 2006: Saint Clair
With trophies and gold medals galore in recent years, Saint Clair capped it all off with six gold medal winning sauvignon blancs at teh 2006 Air New Zealand Wine Awards. Yet they also fashion frisky riesling, creamy Omaka Reserve Chardonnay and value plus pinot nor. 'Nuff said.

This is the first time we have nominated winery of the year...Regional's winery of the year is SAINT CLAIR of Marlborough. The Ibbotsons have continued their run of successes and awards. The recognition that this outstanding producer has received this year is just phenomenal.

Saint Clair has now edged out Palliser and Cloudy Bay as this country's top sauvignon blanc maker, my database of tasting records shows.

The 2006 Marlborough SB is just stunning. I tried a bottle for my new releases and newspaper columns, and I immediately ordered four cases for personal consumption. Please don't change your style -- it is refreshing.

Oh my Gawd! When will Saint Clair just step aside for a year or so and let someone else have a go? I think I’ve said it hundreds of times, the Wairau Reserve has won pretty much every award, every gold medal, every trophy, every 5-star rating and every cup that can possibly be won by a sauvignon blanc. It is clearly one of NZ’s most highly awarded wines.

Neal Ibbotson said the intention was to create world-class wines at competitive prices and to this end I can say that they have done just that.

Saint Clair Doctor’s Creek Pinot Noir 2001 – 5 Stars. Beautiful, delicious in a quality you simply do not find in Burgundy at that price.
