The single vineyard ‘Pioneer Block’ wines of Saint Clair require separate handling, the winery using 250 small tanks to manage this. The amount of detail for winemakers Matt Thomson and Hamish Clark and their team is considerable, but the result is a fascinating range of wines that express their origin and site. In essence Saint Clair is bottling ‘terroir’ for keen wine enthusiasts to ponder and enjoy. The quality per se of the ‘Pioneer Block’ wines has been extremely high as well, reflecting the identification of superior as well as individual vineyards by Saint Clair’s owner Neal Ibbotson.

"A full-bodied rich, ripe, toasty barrel ferment style with a light gold colour and mouthfilling spicy, savoury and citrus fruit flavours with upfront grapefruit to the fore, stonefruit emerging on the mid to end-palate and a long, rich, creamy, almost caramel finish."
Kingsley and Sam, First Glass Wines & Spirits, 25 May 2007

"Gorgeous grapefruit and lemon characters mix with a mealy oak and creamy stone fruit on the palate. Combine that with bracing acidity and a burst of tropical terrificness and you’ve got a flavour stacked fruit bomb that really appeals.”
Yvonne-Marie Lorkin, Manawatu Standard, 14 June 2007

"...savoury notes and ripe stone fruit with toasty oak on the nose. The palate is tight but shows excellent concentration of fruit and structure with crisp acidity. One to watch."
Sam King, Wine Orbit, July 2007
