The single vineyard ‘Pioneer Block’ wines of Saint Clair require separate handling, the winery using 250 small tanks to manage this. The amount of detail for winemakers Matt Thomson and Hamish Clark and their team is considerable, but the result is a fascinating range of wines that express their origin and site. In essence Saint Clair is bottling ‘terroir’ for keen wine enthusiasts to ponder and enjoy. The quality per se of the ‘Pioneer Block’ wines has been extremely high as well, reflecting the identification of superior as well as individual vineyards by Saint Clair’s owner Neal Ibbotson.

“Still fresh and youthful but each passing month will open this up well. Plenty of uncluttered Marlborough fruit, good spine and balance and lots of drinkability. No hurry.”
Winestate Magazine, May/June 2006
"Saint Clair has made its Unoaked Chardonnay look rich, groovy and inviting-and it delivers. Fresh-cut nectarine, grapefruit and peaches on the nose and there’s power and length on the palate. One of the best unoaked chardonnays I’ve ever tried-that’s a fact.” 4.5 stars.
Yvonne Dudman, Hawkes Bay Today, 1 July 2006
“...This unoaked, fruit-driven chardonnay is fresh and charming, overflowing with suggestions of peaches, pears, apricots, a suggestion of creamy nuttiness and a crisp, juicy finish.”
Charmian Smith, Otago Daily Times, 5 July 2006
