So far, the 2011s show plenty of promise and some pretty terrific wines and values. At the top of the list, not surprisingly, is Saint Clair. Saint Clair winemaker Matt Thomson is passionate about Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, and he's exploring the region in depth with the Pioneer Block series, which focuses on select parcels and vineyard sites. I like those wines very much but the reserve bottling is truly the standout - aromatic and elegant, and wonderfully delicious.

“It is difficult to beat Saint Clair whites for deliciousness and value, and this chardonnay is no exception. I loved the delicious suggestions of grapefruit, ripe peaches and bergamot, which are backed by nutty, slightly creamy complexities reminiscent of freshly baked biscuits.”
Charmian Smith, Otago Daily Times, 22 January 2006

“I also like the Saint Clair 2004 Chardonnay as a vibrant and tangy white at a great price.”
Charles Gill, Taranaki Daily News, 20 December 2005

“This wine rips the pants off most Hawke’s Bay chardonnay I’ve tried recently. Where to begin? I could start with the juicy, seductive stone fruit with a smack of citrus. Then proceed with the uncovering of layers of soft oak and flavours of fig, cinnamon and orange peel. This wine is multidimensional, full and satisfying and beautifully put together.”
Yvonne Dudman, Hawkes Bay Today, 10 December 2005
