So far, the 2011s show plenty of promise and some pretty terrific wines and values. At the top of the list, not surprisingly, is Saint Clair. Saint Clair winemaker Matt Thomson is passionate about Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, and he's exploring the region in depth with the Pioneer Block series, which focuses on select parcels and vineyard sites. I like those wines very much but the reserve bottling is truly the standout - aromatic and elegant, and wonderfully delicious.

“... a lovely, rich, mellow character: plenty of dark plum, spice and berry flavours with smooth, well-integrated tannins and a silky finish. It is big and lush, yet surpisingly elegant.”
Jane Skilton, The Independent, 5 April 2006

“Wonderfully aromatic with forest floor, lush fruit, and tea leafy characters. On the palate it’s a beautifully textured wine with black cherry flavours and loads of aging potential.”
Hawkes Bay Today, 30 July 2005

"A highly perfumed wine with a strong 'fruits of the forest' character. Glossy, opulent plum and raspberry fruit flavours, a touch of French oak and a lingering, concentrated finish. Good stuff."
The Team, Wine NZ, July 2005
