Vineyard Event a Big Success

14 May 2007

Tony Ibbotson runs his first half marathon in 1 hour 45 minutes Christchurch runner Paul Morrow took line honours with a smart time of 1 hr 13min 27 sec. The former Canterbury road and cross-country title holder shot out from the bell with fellow Cantab Michael Stewart, then at the 8km mark gradually pulled away to win clearly by over five minutes.

Morrow enjoyed the event. "The course was fantastic", he said " What races do you get to go down between the vines and alongside a river? Spectacular. Very special race."

The scenic course started and finished at Saint Clair Cellar Door and Cafe in Selmes Road, wound over a mainly cross country course of 21km through vineyards, along the Wairau River stop banks, through a creek and on a road section to the finish line.

Race organising spokesman Callum Anderson said the response from all competing was positive. "We were really stoked. First timers were pleased with their results and there were some good runners as well. No major injuries."

He said they hoped to increase the field to 600 next year, but first needed to speak to property owers involved and their major sponsors, Saint Clair Marlborough.

He said a lot of people were disappointed at not being able to take part due to the restricted entry list this year and filling 600 places would not be difficult in future.
