In addition to establishing new exports, Saint Clair’s reputation and popularity is increasing with existing markets. Saint Clair is now one of the biggest selling New Zealand wines in Sweden. Sales increased by 64 per cent in the significant UK on-premise restaurant trade market and sales in Canada and US have also increased, attributed to endorsement in the popular Wine Spectator magazine, as well as a new distributors in both the US and Quebec. Australians have been enjoying a drop of Saint Clair as well, with sales in Western Australia alone growing 110 per cent last year.
As for the domestic market, Neal Ibbotson comments, “We are delighted to see 40 per cent increased sales here in New Zealand.
Saint Clair’s most popular variety continues to be Sauvignon Blanc however we have also been experiencing strong growth in our Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay sales.
And it’s not just the wine that is globetrotting, Saint Clair’s Chief Winemaker Matt Thomson is currently hosting trade and media tastings for Saint Clair in the UK, Sweden and Ireland. And, next month, buyers and media from Sweden, UK, Quebec, Canada, Hong Kong, China, Ireland and Italy, are visiting the Saint Clair winery and vineyards to experience firsthand the wine making process Saint Clair employs to create its award-winning wine.
Going from market to market and strength to strength, Saint Clair has been awarded 48 trophies and 135* gold medals since 2001. Due to the domestic and international success of 2006, expansion plans are already in place for the new Saint Clair Estate Winery that officially opened in March last year.
