Kate and Tony Ibbotson, Saint Clair Winery Opening 2006 Tony Ibbotson, son of Saint Clair Estate Winery owners, Neal and Judy Ibbotson and Saint Clair’s design consultant , has been awarded a prestigious design trophy at the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2006. Results were announced at a banquet dinner in London on 1 November.
Tony Ibbotson was awarded the trophy for ‘Innovation in Wine Presentation’, for the design of the Saint Clair Pioneer Block 1 Sauvignon Blanc 2005, which he won ahead of L’Egregore 2003 (France), Hunter Valley Semillon (Australia), Lanzerac Classic Red (South Africa), Oakville Ranch Roberts Blend Pinotage (South Africa) and Baldor Syrah (Spain).
Tony has his own branding consultancy, The Creative Method, in Surry Hills, Sydney. Tony designed the original Saint Clair labels back in 1994, when he was a design student. He has been designing and expanding the range of Saint Clair labels ever since and this trophy recognises his work.
He comments, “I wanted the label to communicate the special qualities of the grapes selected for Pioneer Block and try to move away from predictable forms of wine labeling, producing something a little more contemporary. The design is reflective of the pioneering past and use unique print techniques to create a stamp effect that also reinforces the hand made quality associated with this wine.”
Saint Clair Pioneer Block was launched in 2005 and is a specialist range of wines made from small parcels of outstanding fruit identified by Saint Clair’s winemaker. The unique properties of the soil and site combine to provide unique flavours and textures to the wines. The wine itself is enjoying both local and global award successes.
Saint Clair is a family-owned business and Tony’s sisters Sarina and Julie both work within the business in sales and marketing after studying Wine Business Marketing at Adelaide University.
Neal Ibbotson comments, “This is a different kind of trophy for Saint Clair and reinforces that Saint Clair’s outstanding performance is based on a team of experts. Tony has creative flair and initiative, and it is great to see this being recognised.”
Saint Clair Estate Wines was also nominated for New Zealand Wine Producer of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2006, as they have been for the last three years, winning this prestigious award last year.
Saint Clair Estate Wines began in 1994 and has received a multitude of prestigious awards and trophies from around the world. They now have five significant regional vineyard sites and excellent knowledge and experience of which varieties grow best at each site. Not to mention the new, high-tech, winery that opened in March 2006 and will see production levels for 2007 at around 300,000 cases.
