"Saint Clair now makes the country’s and perhaps the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc. Saint Clair has won more top awards for Sauvignon Blanc in recent years than any of the three or four hundred other local producers. Although Sauvignon Blanc is clearly Saint Clair’s signature wine it has also earned trophies for Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Riesling over the same period."
Bob Campbell, Master of Wine Air New Zealand In Flight Magazine
"Each time I’ve seen a new vintage of their premium Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, I’ve believed it was the best NZ Sauvignon of its year."

Giving So Many Reasons to Raise Your Glass (of Saint Clair Wine)

27 September 2006

Neal and Judy Ibbotson at the New Zealand International Wine Show 2006 Saint Clair Estate Wines is recognised as one of New Zealand’s benchmark producers of Sauvignon Blanc and a number of recent award wins across three wine shows has confirmed this status both for its Sauvignon Blanc and also across its growing portfolio of wines.

Neal Ibbotson, owner of Saint Clair Estate Wines, attributes the amazing run of success, to the quality and the expertise of the Saint Clair people involved, the vineyards and the new Saint Clair winery, which has lifted the quality of the wine since its official opening in March 2006. “Combine all that with a commitment to using 100% screw cap closures,” comments Neal Ibbotson, “and it means I am no longer apologising to customers about wine with off flavours as a direct result of cork closures and now I am just enjoying all the positive feedback we are receiving. It’s great that we are consistently producing wines that we can be proud of, where the closure does not detract from the quality of the wine.”

Neal and Judy Ibbotson – the owners of Saint Clair Estate Wines – were two of Marlborough’s earliest vineyard pioneers – planting their first vines in 1978. They now have five significant regional vineyard sites and an excellent knowledge of which varieties grow best at each site.

A number of ‘small parcel’ wines have been identified across each vintage as excellent examples of their variety. The terroir is very important to these wines - the vineyard soils, climate and vineyard location sets them apart from the other Saint Clair wines. These unique wines are a separate brand within the Saint Clair portfolio - Pioneer Block – as they reflect the Saint Clair commitment to pioneering new regions and new winemaking techniques.
